// Iconic Colour Changes: Cars Made Famous by Their Finish

Black Mercedes G-Class, front view, in the Wrapd Studios workshop

Some cars are remembered as much for how they look as for what’s under the bonnet. A particular colour, a stripe or a bare-metal finish can become so linked with a car that it’s impossible to picture it any other way.

Here’s a look at some famous examples, and how a colour-change wrap lets you capture that kind of identity on your own car.

Cars Remembered for Their Finish

AC Cobra: blue with white stripes

The Cobra is often pictured in deep blue with twin white racing stripes running nose to tail. The combination became shorthand for American-British muscle.

Mercedes AMG Hammer: all black

The original Hammer saloon’s menacing all-black look helped build the legend of a car that looked like a business saloon but went like a supercar.

Lotus Carlton: Imperial Green

Every Lotus Carlton wore the same dark Imperial Green, a quiet colour that suited a car known for understated speed.

DeLorean: brushed stainless

Thanks to film fame, the DeLorean’s unpainted stainless steel became one of the most recognisable finishes ever.

What Makes a Finish Iconic?

  • Consistency: a single colour or scheme that the car is known for
  • Contrast: stripes or details that define the shape
  • Character: a finish that suits the car’s personality
  • Simplicity: the most memorable looks are rarely complicated

Recreating an Iconic Look With a Wrap

You don’t need a respray to capture a famous finish. A colour-change wrap gives you:

  • the look you want in gloss, satin, matt or metallic
  • protection for the paint underneath
  • reversibility: go back to factory paint later
  • stripes and details added with printed or cut vinyl

Classic colour plus stripes

A solid body colour with contrasting stripes is one of the most timeless looks. A colour-change wrap starts from £2,000 +VAT, with stripes and graphics designed to suit your car.

All-black stealth

Satin or gloss black, paired with dechroming (from £100 +VAT, typically 2–24 hours) and dark wheels, captures that menacing, understated look.

Heritage greens and deep colours

Dark greens, blues and burgundies give a classic, understated feel that suits saloons and GTs.

Brushed metal effects

Brushed and metallic finishes give the look of bare metal while protecting the paint underneath.

Designing Your Own Signature Look

Not every iconic look has to be borrowed. Many of our customers create their own:

1. Choose a hero colour that suits your car’s lines.

2. Pick a finish: gloss for depth, satin for modern refinement, matt for drama.

3. Add contrast with stripes, roof or mirror details.

4. Finish the details: calipers (from £250 +VAT), wheels and trim.

Our design service starts from £150 +VAT, and printed or custom wraps start from £3,000 +VAT for more detailed designs.

Remember Your V5C

If your wrap changes the car’s main colour, update your V5C with the DVLA and tell your insurer. Our DVLA wrap guide explains how.

Protect It Once It’s Done

A ceramic coating over your wrap, from £200 +VAT, keeps the finish looking its best and makes cleaning easier. On paintwork, our ceramic packages start from £400 +VAT (Bronze), from £600 +VAT (Silver) and from £800 +VAT (Gold). We use Gyeon, CarPro and Gtechniq.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you add racing stripes to a wrap?

Yes. Stripes can be added in a contrasting colour over a colour-change wrap or over original paint, designed to follow your car’s lines.

Will a wrap damage my paint?

A professionally fitted wrap is designed to be removed later. If your paint is original and in good condition, careful removal leaves it as it was, protected from light scratches and fading in the meantime. We check the paint first and tell you honestly if a respray or repair has left areas we’d be cautious about.

How do I look after a wrap?

Hand wash with a pH-neutral shampoo and a soft mitt, rinse grit off first, and avoid brush washes. A ceramic coating over the wrap, from £200 +VAT, makes cleaning quicker.
