// The Stealth Look: Dechrome, Satin Wraps and Tints for a Q-Car Finish

Not every car enthusiast wants to be noticed. For some, the ultimate style is understatement: a car that looks modest but means business. In Britain, that’s known as a Q-car or sleeper.

You don’t need a hidden twin-turbo engine to enjoy the look. Some subtle visual changes can give any car a stealthy, refined finish. Here’s how.

What Is a Q-Car?

The term comes from the Q-ships of the First World War: armed ships disguised as ordinary merchant vessels. In car terms, a Q-car hides serious performance behind an unassuming exterior.

Classic examples include fast saloons such as the Lotus Carlton and Vauxhall Omega, and today plenty of performance estates and saloons follow the same idea. The appeal is quiet confidence: no shouting, just substance.

The modern “stealth” look borrows that spirit. Clean lines, dark or muted colours, minimal chrome and no unnecessary badges.

Building the Stealth Look

Dechroming

Chrome trim is the first thing to go. Window surrounds, grille surrounds, badges and bumper trim can be wrapped in gloss black, satin black or a colour-matched finish.

Dechroming is one of the most effective changes you can make: it instantly makes a car look sleeker and more purposeful. It starts from £100 +VAT and usually takes between 2 and 24 hours depending on the car.

Satin and matt wraps

A satin or matt colour-change wrap is a stealth-look favourite. Satin black, grey, dark green or deep blue give a modern, understated finish that shows off a car’s shape without shine.

Full colour-change wraps start from £2,000 +VAT. Satin wraps also protect the paint underneath, and the original colour is there if you change your mind.

Window tint

Darker rear glass adds privacy and completes the look. For front glass, UK law sets minimum light levels, so we offer road-legal options, including chameleon windscreen film from £180 +VAT and front windows from £120 +VAT.

Light tints

Lightly tinted lights can complete a stealthy finish. We’ll advise on what’s appropriate and keeps lights working as they should. See our window and light tinting service.

Black or subtle calipers

A true Q-car keeps things subtle. Black, graphite or dark calipers add a finished look without drawing attention. Or go the other way for a single hint of colour. Caliper painting starts from £250 +VAT.

Wheels

Dark wheels, or factory wheels refurbished in gunmetal or black, tie the whole look together. See our wheel refurbishment service.

De-badging

Removing model badges is classic sleeper style. We can remove or black out badges as part of a dechrome.

Keep It Cohesive

The secret of the stealth look is restraint. Choose a palette, typically black, grey and one body colour, and make sure trim, wheels, glass and calipers all work together.

Protect the Finish

Stealthy cars often wear dark colours, which show swirls and stone chips easily. Consider:

  • Paint protection film, from £1,200 +VAT for a Full Front End, to guard against chips
  • Satin PPF to protect paint without adding gloss
  • Ceramic coating over a wrap or PPF, from £200 +VAT, for easier cleaning. We use Gyeon, CarPro and Gtechniq.
  • On paintwork, our ceramic packages start from £400 +VAT (Bronze), from £600 +VAT (Silver) and from £800 +VAT (Gold).

Frequently Asked Questions

Is dechroming reversible?

Yes. The vinyl used for dechroming can be removed later, leaving the original chrome underneath. It’s popular on leased cars for that reason.

Will tinted front windows be legal?

Our front-glass options are all road legal and meet UK light transmission rules. Darker tint is available for the rear windows.

Can you remove badges?

Yes. Badges can be removed or blacked out as part of a dechrome, and we’ll advise on the cleanest approach for your car.
