// Recreating a Classic Racing Livery With a Printed Wrap

Light blue Porsche 911 GT3 with a grey and red centre stripe, front view

Some racing liveries are so iconic that you recognise them in a split second, even on a road car. For decades, enthusiasts have copied their favourites with paint. Today, a printed vinyl wrap makes it possible to recreate a classic livery with crisp detail, and without committing to a permanent respray.

Here are the liveries owners love most, and how we bring them to life at our Knaresborough studio.

The Liveries Owners Love Most

Subaru World Rally Team

Deep blue with gold wheels and bright accents became the look of 1990s rallying. Thanks to video games and rally fans everywhere, it’s one of the most copied colour schemes in the car world, and it still looks fantastic on a modern hatch or saloon.

Gulf Racing Colours

Powder blue and bright orange is one of motorsport’s most recognisable combinations, linked with endurance racing legends. It’s cheerful, distinctive and works on everything from classic sports cars to modern performance models.

Lotus Green, and Black and Gold

British racing green with yellow, and the elegant black and gold of the 1970s and 80s, are both strongly associated with Lotus. Black and gold in particular remains one of the most stylish livery choices around.

Why a Wrap Beats Paint for a Livery

Painting a multi-colour livery is expensive and permanent. A printed wrap has clear advantages:

  • Detail and accuracy: printed graphics can reproduce stripes, shapes and colour fades with precision.
  • Reversible: remove it later and the original paint is underneath, protected from light scratches and fading.
  • Flexible: change your mind in a few years and update the design.
  • Faster: no long paint booth time.

Getting the Design Right

A livery that looks good on a race car doesn’t automatically suit every road car. Good design adapts the scheme to the shape of your vehicle.

Respect the lines of the car

Stripes and colour breaks should flow with the bodywork, not fight against it.

Simplify where needed

Race cars carry lots of sponsor graphics. On a road car, a cleaner interpretation usually looks more stylish.

Consider trademarks

Some liveries include registered logos and brand names. We’ll help you create a design inspired by a classic scheme, focusing on colours, shapes and stripes, without simply copying protected logos.

Think about the details

Wheels, calipers and trim all play a part. Gold wheels on a blue car, or a contrasting caliper colour, can tie the whole look together.

The Wrapd Process

1. Consultation: we discuss the livery you love and how you’ll use the car.

2. Design: our design service, from £150+VAT, adapts the scheme to your vehicle with mock-ups to approve.

3. Printing and preparation: the design is printed and the car is thoroughly cleaned and prepared.

4. Fitting: careful application, with panels and parts removed where needed for clean edges.

5. Finishing touches: dechrome, calipers or wheels to complete the look.

What Does It Cost?

As a guide:

  • Printed or custom wrap: from £3,000+VAT
  • Design fee: from £150+VAT
  • Colour-change wrap (for a single-colour base with stripes added): from £2,000+VAT
  • Caliper painting: from £250+VAT
  • Dechroming: from £100+VAT
  • Ceramic coating over a wrap: from £200+VAT
  • On paintwork, our ceramic packages start from £400 +VAT (Bronze), £600 +VAT (Silver) and £800 +VAT (Gold).

Final pricing depends on the vehicle and the complexity of the design.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you copy a livery exactly?

We can recreate the colours, stripes and shapes that make a livery recognisable. Registered logos and sponsor names may be protected, so we’ll create a design inspired by the original rather than copying trademarks.

Will a livery wrap damage my paint?

A professionally fitted wrap is designed to be removed later. If your paint is original and in good condition, careful removal leaves it as it was, protected from light scratches and fading in the meantime. We check the paint first and tell you honestly if a respray or repair has left areas we’d be cautious about.

Do I need to tell the DVLA?

Yes, if it changes the car’s main colour. Update your V5C with the DVLA and let your insurer know. Our DVLA wrap guide explains it in plain English.
