How Does Self-Healing Paint Protection Film Work?

Given that your car represents a relatively significant investment, it’s important that you do all you can to look after it inside and out, keeping it clean, tidy and safeguarded against the combined pressures of the weather, the state of the roads, pests and accidental damage.

It’s very easy to fall into the trap of just taking care of the car interiors. After all, that’s where you sit when you’re driving, so it’s very noticeable when dirt and grime starts to pile up.

But you’ve got to pay close attention to the exterior of the vehicle, as well, or you run the risk of metal degradation, rust and holes. Before you know it, your beautiful car isn’t quite as shiny and luxurious as it once was.

This is something of a wonder product that was originally invented to cover helicopter blades and plane parts, but now it’s commonplace for drivers to use it to look after their vehicles and protect vulnerable components, while ensuring that they continue to look their best, no matter what.

The film itself is a thermoplastic urethane or some kind of clear flexible acrylic that can be applied to the surface of your car. It comes with all sorts of benefits, including a high level of scratch and stain resistance and hydrophobic features to make car maintenance a breeze.

But one of its biggest plus points is the fact that it’s self-healing, which means that even if your car does sustain a few minor scuffs and scratches here and there, you don’t have to worry about manual repairs. Your vehicle will just fix itself!

This self-healing technology works thanks to the inclusion of specific elastomers which, when exposed to heat (like the sun or a heat gun), become more pliable so that they’re able to reform their original shape more easily, smoothing out any scratches and bringing your vehicle back to life.

Of course, it’s important to remember that this self-healing feature does only work where minor damage is concerned, so if you’ve got a deep scratch or a chip, you will need to have a professional take a look at it - but it’s great that you don’t have to worry about the little issues and can just let the PPF take care of it on your behalf.

It’s fast becoming a hugely popular option for all sorts of drivers, but it’s long been favoured by those behind the wheel of big-ticket luxury vehicles, which need an extra level of protection.

You can have the film applied to the entire car or just those areas you think are most prone to sustaining damage, like the trunk ledge, door edge guards and door handles. It’s entirely up to you, so you can tailor the look to suit your preferences… and your budget!
